A unique and enjoyable book. I had heard of Seabiscuit, but knew nothing about thoroughbred racing, in general. This is a book about people, adversity, and loyalty. For the movie, I like Robert Duvall to play Tom Smith. This is a book for everyone, not just sports fans. Look forward to your next book!

Dear Ms. Hillenbrand, After practicing over 30 yrs on the race track I can say your book brought back fond memories. I often wished I would have taperecorded some of the events I witnessed and took part in during those years. The race track life is quite interesting and is infact a life in itself.

Dear Laura, I have just finished SEABISCUIT and hated for it to end. It was beautifully written with such vibrance and compassion for the characters and the horses. I have been working on a personal project on the Thoroughbred scene for the past ten years. The nuances I have observed were clarified in your book and gave me a much deeper understanding for the people I have met over the years. It is truly a captivating world with many layers. My work is only one layer. I am in the process of editing work for a book and hope to complete it by the beginning of next year. I have another book that I just completed with a friend, which now allows me to fully concentrate on the Thoroughbred book. Some of the work is featured on my web site: http://home.earthlink.net/~bellaclick/index.html. I was wondering if you would be at all interested in writing a brief forward for my book? I know you are busy with the movie and the book is still in the editing stage. Please let me know your thoughts. I also believe with one email that Robert Duval would be brilliant for Tom Smith! Best of luck with the movie and your future ventures-you have wonderful writing gift! Anne Converse

Dear Laura, I finally finished SEABISCUIT, but hated for it to end!! I have always been a horselover and was glued to your vibrant, compassionate and beautifully written story. I am a free-lance photographer and have been photographing the thoroughbred scene for the past ten years, mostly training and behind the scenes for a personal documentary. Your book explained so many nuances that I had observed on the rail. I have been working on a book-a photographic essay-of the project. I know there are many layers to the Thoroughbred scene that I saw yet my work is only one layer. If you would at all be interested in writing a forward for the book, I would love to have your insight. I have had some interest with publishers a few years ago and will begin to research again. I have been involved with another book that was just completed. Some of my thoroughbred work is featured on my web site. I'm sure you are busy with the movie which sounds wonderful and I will be looking forward to the release. I agree with the recent email that Robert Duval would be fabulous as Smith! All the best with the movie and your future ventures-you have the gift! Anne Converse

The following is news printed in Blood Horse magazine and Thoroughbred Times. Thoroughbred Charities Approves Donation to New York Heroes Fund Date Posted: 9/19/01 8:26:31 AM Last Updated: 9/19/01 11:15:33 AM Thoroughbred Charities of America announced it will be donating $50,000 to the National Thoroughbred Association's "NTRA Charities -- New York Heroes Fund." The fund was established to benefit the families of the fire fighters, police officers, emergency services personnel and others who died in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centers on Sept. 11. "Our hearts go out to all the victims, their families and all the brave people who worked so hard," said TCA president Herb Moelis. "This is a national tragedy that affects us all and it is going to take the efforts of us all to rebuild and protect our freedom. The Thoroughbred industry must step up to help." TCA's primary source of funding is its annual benefit auction of stallion seasons and sporting art, this year scheduled for December 1. The policy of the TCA is to allow season donors to designate the beneficiary of the proceeds from the sale of those seasons. Anyone wishing to include a season in this year's auction may earmark the proceeds for the New York Heroes Fund, or a Thoroughbred charity of their choice. Call me when you can, my work # 800-369-3799 Thank you, Bobby Lillis Benefits Coordinator

Ms. Hillenbrand, I borrowed my father's copy of Seabiscuit that he received as a Christmas gift. I have spent many summer days at Saratoga Race Track being thrilled by the magnificance of the thoroughbred horse. Your book was wonderful to read and I'm looking forward to the movie. You are truly a gifted writer. Thanks for all your efforts.

Great book, Laura. Can't wait for the movie. How do you think the following horses would have fared in a single race against each other? (Please rank in order of finish) : Seabiscuit, Man o' War, Secretariat, Citation, and Seattle Slew? Let me know. Thanks. Bob

I will be leading the discussion of your book for our Page Turner's group and would love to locate a source for inter-views you have done, NPR story, Good Morning America... anything more that would be of interest. Is there a source on "the net?" We are fortunate to have "a Howard connection" and look forward to hearing more from her. Thank you!

Loved your book!!!! I am still reading and am quite certain I will re-read and re-read. Given the Worlds tragedy we all have felt, your book has been an inspiration. A "don't quit" theme rings loud and true. I only hope that more of us will be drawn to your book. I can't wait for the movie and I'm sure it will be a big hit. We have a book area located in the store that I work at. It would be great to host a Sea Biscuit Day with a book signing. Many thanks for a great book!

The story of Seabiscuit was very inspiring. It is amazing how an animal can show us the value of commitment and heart. It has inspired me to rise to challenges in myown life and keep believing in myself and others in this difficult time. It wasn't mentioned in the book but I was wondering if Seattle Slew was related to Seabiscuit. If anyone know please email me. I loved Seattle Slew when he was racing and the story of his meager beginnings.

Dear Laura, Thank you so much for providing such wonderful entertainment through the print medium. During these troubling terrorist times, it was a comfort to pick up your book and be transported away to another time and place. I and my wife are both suffering with the complications of a Chronic Fatigue-like Syndrome. We both know how hard it must have been for you to work on this book. We have lived in the Pawtucket, RI area and will try to find Red Pollard's house! If and when we do, we'll try to send you a current picture. We hope you are continued to be blessed with success in the future.

Dear Laura, I so enjoyed your book on Seabiscuit. My dad loved horseracing. He was a redhead from Scotland. I could just imagine him in the crowds and can now understand his love of the sport. My mother once told me that they were at the races and my dad was so excited about a horse that won. My mom said "but Tom you didn't bet on him and he answered but what a magnifcant ride he gave." I never forgot that. thanks for bringing those memories of my dad back. Nancy

Dear Laura, After being mesmorized By the television accounts of our terrible national tragedy I needed something to restore my sanity. I have been involved in standard bred horse racing for many years and a friend suggested I read your book. I would like you to know how much I enjoyed it, and hope that someday you will elect to write something similar about the harness industry. Thanks again for a great effort. A. Baron

I received your book about Seabiscuit as a birthday present. I am a practicing veterinarian with ties to QH, TB and Arab racing through my employment as a veterinarian with the MI Racing Commission. There are many great athletes and heroes within the spectrum that we call horse racing and they deserve to be brought to the attention of the general public. Horse racing is a great sport! Good Job !
